Today we honor cellophane tape—the reason your fur mysteriously collects confetti all week.

Every May 27th, humans celebrate National Cellophane Tape Day, and as a cat, I can only assume it’s so they have an excuse to leave sticky strips everywhere (including, unfortunately, my tail). Invented in the 1930s to help seal up packages, cellophane tape has spent decades clinging to history—and, occasionally, to the bottom of a paw.
People celebrate in true tape-wasting fashion: making crafts, fixing torn things, or just seeing how long a roll lasts before it disappears to the black hole under the couch. Fun fact: the original tape was designed to help bakers seal up wrappers, but now it’s mostly used for...wrapping presents that cats are definitely not allowed to open (yeah, good luck with that).
So today, whether you’re unrolling a masterpiece or just wrestling with an empty dispenser, spare a thought for all the cats valiantly fighting the sticky battle on your behalf. Happy sticking!
